Sherry writing . . . A co-worker of mine used her lawyerly powers of persuausion to convince the head of our department that the women of the group really needed a bonding, morale-boosting event of their own, on
the firm. To the
Madonna concert. In awesome box seats. Naturally. So, yesterday evening we
all left the firm at a decent hour (which never happens) for a night of voguing our hearts out. We started with cocktails and hors d'oeuvre at the
Ruby Room, a
fantastic red-infused art-deco bar (click for links) at the Onyx Hotel nearby. It was full of well-heeled Madonna fans, and the Ruby Room had the foresight to play Madonna videos around the bar in anticipation of the event, while its patrons sipped cosmos and got into the groove. Then we headed over to the TD Banknorth Garden. (Why do sports arenas have such terrible names these days? What was wrong with The Garden? What was wrong with Candlestick Park? Anyway, I digress . . . ) Our seats were fabulous, and we had wine, snacks and really good binoculars to add to our great time. And a great time it was. I have never been to a better concert in my life. First of all, Madonna doesn't put on a "concert." She puts on a full
production, with amazing costumes, sets and dancers. The two-hour
Confessions Tour (click for link) performance was one giant heart-thumping, feet-pounding rush. Madonna is in better shape than a college athlete-- that much is clear-- and has a body and endurance to show for it. Her moves are astounding; while she was rolling around on the ground at one point (when she wasn't dancing, gyrating, or climbing on something), I counted six splits in a row.
She's an amazing dancer, and her back-up dancers are even better. She doesn't waste her fans' time or money with an "opening" act; she performs for the entire time, without stop, and doesn't bother with an encore. She is a driven, powerful, incredibly hard-working woman, and her shows exhibit those traits very clearly. Every moment is staged, every angle rehearsed, every photo montage behind her likely hand-chosen by Madonna herself. There are a lot of reasons why Madonna has the longevity that no other pop star has had, why she is the "QUEEN of Pop." And I have to say, I'm forever a fan. The
